Despite more than half a century having passed since the death of jazz singer Billie Holiday at just 44 years of age, her voice is still very much alive. Her singular phrasing and personal interpretation of lyrics is still fascinating today. Moreover, she was joint composer of several jazz standards including God Bless the Child and Fine and Mellow. Here we can enjoy music that is strongly associated with Billie Holiday, as performed in their own style by students from the improvisation programme.

An unusual concert with the Musica Vitae string orchestra where one of the works encloses the other one. The composer Ole Lützow-Holm has written music that links the programme up into a whole. With short interludes, the other works are put in relief. The idea for the concert is a collaboration between the composer and the conductor Staffan Larson, with links to a research project on musical interpretation.

Spanish music also experienced a golden age. The Gothenburg ensemble Convivium Musicum has made an in-depth study of the collection of songs called Cancionero de Palacio from this period and here offer a selection of all the profane songs they found. How often have you heard a sextet or a concert consisting of up to 15 pianos? This project started as a collaboration between Conservatorio di Musica E.F. Dall' Abaco in Verona, Italy and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. Now Gothenburg has joined in. Composers in the participating countries contribute new pieces for massed pianos. Concerts are given in each country by local and visiting pianists from the different schools under the direction of the conductor and composer Carlo Miotto from Verona.

Long into the 19th century it was common for melody instrumentalists to improvise preludes (overtures/introductions) to the pieces of music they were going to play. This open seminar gives us more information about the use of improvised preludes in the period 1600-1800, as well as tips on how and why contemporary musicians should be able to resume the art of preludes.
